We experience the world with our perception thanks to our five senses, especially the sense of sight and the sense of touch in our Western culture. They provide us with a reassuring and stable basis which enables us to remain connected to reality. However I’ve always been fascinated by the visible or invisible natural phenomena which belong to the physical world, which are ruled by its laws and are mainly present in the atmosphere. These cosmic and mainly meteorological phenomena are essential for the balance of the universe even if we are not entirely aware of their role and complexity.
Air, gas, light, sound, cloud, smoke, fog, wind, lightning bolt, magnetism, heat and humidity are enriching and inspiring phenomena whose particularities both unstable and intangible make them promising for creation. Their materiality plays with the limits of perception and implies new constraints, scales and stakes.
The contemporary questions at the core of the essay are :
How is the designer, who is used to giving shape to tangible matter, supposed to create and to face an intangible, shapeless and even evolving matter ?
Can the designer accept and preserve the uncontrollable and changing specificities of these phenomena to embrace all the poetry and fascination they represent ?
